Why the Plan S rights retention strategy matters

Why the Plan S rights retention strategy matters Online

In July 2020 cOAlition S launched its Rights Retention Strategy (RRS). The RRS is a tool for funded authors to retain sufficient rights to their own article manuscript, to allow them to use it as they choose. Transferring the original copyright holders’ rights to a publisher usually means that the author’s rights to use the article are severely limited. The RRS seeks to address this anomaly. Release of the RRS has prompted some academic institutions to take even stronger steps towards supporting their researchers to retain rights. This presentation will explain the background and reasoning behind the Plan S RRS, how the RRS is implemented, and describe why and how some institutions are helping their researchers retain control of their articles.

This session will be delivered by two Open Access experts; cOAlition S ambassador Sally Rumsey, and Professor Johan Rooryck Executive Director of cOAlition S. Come along to the session to find out how using this simple but effective strategy ensures that you can retain the rights to the work that you created whilst being compliant with funder requirements around Open Access!

This session should appeal to research active members of staff and research active students that are actively producing publications. The session should also be of interest to information professionals and other stakeholders interested in finding out more about the RRS.
